Join Lozada as we explore children's literature in multilingual and multimodal ways. This presentation includes research-based connections to music-based and language-based literacies.

About Victor Lozada

Picture


​Victor Antonio Lozada, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education in the School of Education at the University of North Texas-Dallas where he serves as the Program Coordinator for the EC-12 Languages Other than English Program. His research includes the intersections among bilingual education, literacy learning, and music education. He frequently presents on these topics at international and national venues such as the National Association for Bilingual Education, La Cosecha Dual Language Conference, the National Association for Music Education conference, the American Educational Research Association, and the American Orff Schulwerk Association. His research can be found in the Bilingual Research Journal, NABE Journal of Research and Practice, the Journal of Language & Literacy Education, Literacy Research and Instruction, and the Journal of General Music Education among others. He also offers suggestions for how secondary teachers can engage their students in being critical about curricula in his co-edited book Engage and Empower! Expanding the Curriculum for Justice and Activism, especially his chapters on rap music and antiracism. His service activities include serving as the Vice President-Elect of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access for the American Orff Schulwerk Association.

"Elemental Musical Adventures: Composing and Creating with Your Students"

Let’s go on an adventure! In this workshop, participants will explore the world of the Orff process and find new ways to sing, say, move, and play. By using simple speech patterns and easily created/obtainable manipulatives, teachers will learn how to process rhythms outside the world of 4/4 and how to allow their students (and themselves) to be their own composers.

About Kate Bright

Picture



Kate Bright is a music teacher for the West Shore School District, where she teaches approximately 700 elementary-aged students. She received her Orff Schulwerk certification at the Philadelphia University of the Arts in 2010 and, in August of 2021, completed her Master’s of Kodály Music Education at the American Kodály  Institute. She has presented at Orff chapters around the country and at the American Orff Schulwerk Association’s National Conference. In 2015, she received the Spotlight Award from the American Center for Elemental Music and Movement, and in 2017 she received her school’s first-ever Staff Member of the Year award.  In her community, Kate also directs the Hummelstown Community Singers. She currently serves as past-president of the Greater Baltimore Area Orff and secretary of ACEMM. Kate has published a children’s book, Just Like the Moon, with F-flat books, and will be releasing her second book, How We Listen, in spring of 2025.

"Creative Processes in Elementary General Music"

How can we teach music in a way that is creative and child-like, yet structured and pedagogically sound? This interactive session provides a practical framework for centering creative processes in elementary general music pedagogy. Attendees will leave with new songs, activities, and teaching processes that can be implemented right away. With an emphasis on creative choice within structure, let's improvise, arrange, and compose our way to musical understanding!

About Victoria Boler

Picture
Victoria Boler is an elementary general music educator, curriculum writer, and author of the Hal Leonard book, “Creative Activities for Teaching General Music.” In addition to general music, Victoria has taught orchestra, choir, and percussion ensembles. In an administrative role, Victoria has served as Fine Arts Coordinator, leading band, orchestra, choir, general music, and musical theater at the programmatic level. She holds a Masters in Music Education from the University of Florida and is a doctoral student at Valdosta State University pursuing an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction with a music concentration. Victoria has completed three levels of Orff Schulwerk certification, two levels of Kodaly training, and is specialized in The Teacher and Social and Emotional Learning by the University of Colorado Boulder.
